Considerations on buying a 911
      #77445 - 10/21/03 09:44 AM

I'm seriously looking into purchasing a 911. Never had a porsche before but always wanted one. I'm generally a muscle car addict. I'm looking to get a 911 SC, ie no targa or convertilbe, between 80-88 or so. I would use it as a second car, but would like to have a very drivable car. I've seen this one on ebay and would like to get your thoughts.

Are parts expensive? ie does a water pump cost $500?
Being familiar with V8's, are these motors totally different to work on? Do you need a lot of special tools?
Is there a big diffference between 3.0 and 3.2's? Is one more reliable or made better than the other?
What is a motronic brain? as advertised in the porsche above.
thanks again,
best, paul.

Paul - 911SC was available from 78 to 83. And one of the things you'll first learn when you get your 911 is that it doesn't cost $500 for a water pump, because it doesn't have one (nor a power steering pump)

The car on ebay is a 79 911SC with a 3.2L motor from a 84-89 Carrera motor. Those years had a Motronic electronic fuel injection system rather than the 3.0L with CIS that originally came with that car. 3.2L had around 35hp more than 3.0L

I'm in a similiar situation, perhaps for different reasons. For me its time to move on from my big block Mopars (71 383 Demon) and find something newer, more civilized that can be driven more often and is still fast/sporty. Perhaps I am just getting older. I've only dreamed of owning a 911 for 30 years. One thing I noticed is that 911's got faster sometime around 1984. Check the zero to 60 specs. The biggest problem I find is trying to drive a 911 as no one I know owns one. I found that the GT Purely Porsche magazine is a good source of info on older 911s even though it is from the UK. Is there a good US mag?
