I am thinking of buying a 1982 911 Targa. I've never owned a Porsche, but have owned many VW Beetles. I was wondering if there is anything special I should look for on this car. It has about 90000 miles, but the engine was just rebuilt. It is in good condition. It is Guard's Red (just happens to be my favorite red, I've painted a few cars that color), but, it originally was blue. It was painted professionally by a Porsche dealer though. Just wondering if there's anything I should look for, and what a decent price would be.

The color change will definitely devalue the car and may indicate an accident repair. Have a shop that is very familiar with 911s look at it for you (worth the money). I'd also do a compression leakdown test, despite the rebuild. I'd also have a good body shop check for accident history. Is there a complete set of repair records? I get nervous when there is none...

Well, as for repair records, yes, there are some. But, the local Porsche mechanic also has a racing team. And supposedly, (and judging by the machining tools in his garage I believe him) he makes parts for the team, and in return the Porsche guy does work for him. Sort of a horse traiding type deal, so no reciepts on those. As far as accidents go, I am a pretty good body worker, and unless they just replaced the panels, there is really no sign of an accident. I am concerned about the fact that the steering whell is broken, on all three points. How might one have done that? And I heard from someone that a way to check for body work is to shut both doors, and listen for a ring. Because of the type of welding done on them from the factory there should be a ring. And most bodyshops aren't capable of this type of welding because of something (the person I heard it from didn't really know why). Is that true? The doors do ring.
