there are probably a few hundred good such sources out there.

http://www.ferrarichat.com/ is a tremendous online general resource to ask questions like this. also check out the dealer/broker sponsors of ferrarichat - good people.

if you want to do all the legwork, the internet is your friend. everybody and their brother deals ferraris - most without a showroom of any sort..

if you don't want to do legwork (and it IS legwork), talk to your local authorized ferrari dealer and they'll dig up the beast you want.

Hi Doody,

First, thanks for the links.

I see you basically bought the 355 I want. Currently I own a 99 996 Speed Yellow Cab which I've owned about 4 years. I'm getting closer to wanting to make a change. I love the Fly Yellow 355 Spyder from a looks and sound perspective over anything else within my budget. I'm on the fence for other considerations and your opinions would be valuable to me.

I track my car somewhat regularly which is why I've always driven cars that were covered by a warranty. I would say the this is the single biggest reason why I hesitate to jump in and buy a 355. My other consideration would be a 01 or 02 996tt which I see you own as well. If you were to be stuck with having just one of these cars (but not having to drive them as daily drivers) which car would you keep?

Some other questions:
What year is your 355?
6 speed or F1?
How many miles did it have?
How many miles do you think is too much for a Ferrari?
Who did you buy it from? Individual or Dealer?
Any type of warranty available?

Sorry for the ton of questions but I'm really starting from ground zero and it's unusual to meet someone who has owned what I currently drive and owns both of the cars I'm considering buying?

Thanks for any help.

Bart

Bart:

Happy to help out.

That's not an entirely fair question. I get bored of my cars easily, and that's a factor. My wife would like me to stay off the track until the kids are older, and that's a factor. I really love the 355 and am a bit jaded about the 996TT (which I'll have had for two years in the spring). The F-car is not maintenance free. You want to have good access geographically to a stellar mechanic (we are lucky to have have a few superb shops in the Boston area). If you're 75 miles from the nearest qualified mechanic, well, that might be pause to noodle. The P-car is freakin' bulletproof.

I would in fact like to track the 355, and have looked into it seriously. The trick is getting a bolt-in rollcage or the like. I would not be willing to track it without such protection - others might disagree.

My car is a 1999 6 Speed. It had not quite 3K on it when I bought it 04/02 and I will get it close to double that by the time she gets put away for the winter in a couple weeks.

In reply to:

How many miles do you think is too much for a Ferrari?

The same number of miles that would be "too much" for a Porsche or an Audi or a Nissan. It's all about whether or not it's been taken care of properly. Service records are not optional. Proper maintenance is not optional. I intend to drive mine. I figure I'll put 5K to 6K per year on it, maybe more if I do some road trips.

Don't be afraid of mileage. You can actually get stellar deals on higher mileage cars, simply because of the semi-irrational attitude about mileage on Ferraris. I've kicked around getting a 550, and I've only looked at higher-mileage cars - they're so much cheaper. Though the converse is an issue for you at resale time if you buy low and drive.

Of course mileage is proporational to service requirements, so if you want a car you're going to put 30K a year on, a 355 would be an expensive (but fun!) option.

This was my first F-car. I wanted one of the last cars produced (05/97 build) with very low mileage, one owner, all records. I paid for this privilege, but the next time around I won't be so picky.

In reply to:

I happened to buy it from a dealer. In the end though it came down to whoever had what I was looking for, which wasn't a big list. I looked at cars from authorized dealers, general dealers, and individuals. It took me six months to buy this car. I seriously considered probably six cars, and put two into PPI.

In reply to:

Any type of warranty available?

The answer is basically "no". You can buy a warranty for ANYTHING of course, but practically speaking, no. FNA will sell you a powertrain warranty on late model cars, but I had a dealer advise against it since they only warranty stuff they know isn't going to break :-).

These things are not free to own. You have to factor that in. Mine hasn't cost me a fortune, but I basically assume that it will and plan accordingly.

Feel free to email me - happy to help.

Doody.
