How do you shift?
      #165979 - 07/28/10 09:21 PM

Ok, so I've been reading various Porsche forums about various shifting techniques. When you are approaching a stop light in 4th gear, do you downshift through all the gears or just put the clutch in and hold it down until the light turns green then put it in 1st and go. I guess what it boils down to is what do you think is best for the life of the clutch? Just curious what you all do.

I usually downshift through the gears to second gear and engage first once stopped. Still have my original clutch on the 996 turbo, with 65k miles. Not sure if its the best technique but that how I drive all my cars. Interesting question, curious what others do.

I never use downshift braking, preferring to allow the engine to gently slow the car down without downshifting. I then push the clutch in, pull the transmission into neutral and hold the brake on. When the light turns green, I clutch, put the car in first gear and move out. Holding the car in gear with the clutch depressed causes undue wear on the throwout bearing.

I think from what I've been reading lately most people would agree with you. The argument is that brake pads are cheaper than clutches.

I use the brakes to slow the car, not the engine. I leave the car in neutral at a stop, until just before I'm ready to start off.

I vary what I do to slow and stop depending on my mood and the situation. If I end up stopped at a light, I keep the transmission in neutral with the clutch released (to save the throwout bearing, and to listen to the can of marbles sound my LWFW produces) until the light changes yellow for the other traffic. At that time I select 2nd, then first and prepare to launch.

At a red light I depress the brake pedal and when it turns green I press the gas. I do usually engage the sport button after starting the car.
