That steering wheel is stunning - It reminds me of the 997 Turbo 19" wheels.

Dang. I love the elegance and artfulness of that interior. Gorgeous. I want to be buried in that car - after I am dead of course.

I don't get it. It's a bathtub with a some dials and levers screwed to it. How is that elegant or artful? Ok, the steering wheel is elegant in a musical instrument kinda way. But the rest of it is... well... old. Like those educated, intelligent, twitter-free women you like . You guys are way too nostalgic.
It does, however, basically represent the "essence of a sports car". Here's a modern incarnation, and it's almost exactly the same (except this one has its engine where it should be). There's no art here, just essence:

My 57 looked like that except it didn't have the banjo wheel. The 356 didn't change much through the years.

Does "artful" have to be visually complicated or busy?

That's where we would disagree Speed - There is art in the simplicity and functional elegance of a Lotus as well.

Warren - that Porsche has its engine in the same place (the first 356, called No. 1 and the one in that photo) was mid-engined before the Production versions changed to rear engine.

I did not know that.
Anyway, it's impossible to define art, isn't it? But the 356 is a bathtub, hardly art. I love it too, I really do - because it is indeed the essence of a sports car. But art? The steering wheel, yes. The rest, particularly the interior, looks like a kit car. I particularly like the elegance and artfulness of the rearview mirror.

That simple yet functional interior carried on for many years in other Porsche inspired cars.
Here is the interior of the Karmann Ghia I restored when I lived in Atlanta.

Warren - look at what else was available at the time to appreciate it as a product that tested new waters. Cave "art" was primitive yet is fully appreciated to be a media of expression for early democrats

This wonderful work brilliantly achieves understated elegance by integrating the naturally flowing lines of minimalist design with the intrinsic purity and beauty of mechanical simplicity. In a sublime manner, the car serves as an icon of mid-century modernism that successfully and elegantly embodies mans' transcendence from the creation of machines of killing to his creation of machines of freedom, joy, discovery, and hope. The message of this piece of rolling sculpture echoes the simple beauty of Picasso's dove or a Calder mobile, for those who open their souls to explore it. It provides an opportunity for comtemplative insight into the past but, more importantly, an opportunity to experience a privileged vision of the future.
My advice to you, Warren, is to memorize the above paragraph and then... very softly, slowly, gently and earnestly, whisper it as you view this car around 40-year-old women at the Porsche museum. Be prepared to get your brain and body worked out later that afternoon, when the woman you were able to pick up with this verse accompanies you back to your hotel in Zuffenhausen. At dinner that evening, after you have had enough wine that her beauty is fully revealed to you, you will think to yourself..."thanks spider".

The only reason I can think of for sleeping with a woman over 40 is that you're married to her. If I'm going to the trouble of picking up women at the Porsche Museum, or anywhere, I'm skipping the 40-pluses. The problem, of course, is that the 40-minuses are skipping me. And who can blame them?
Regarding the 356, I concede that there is elegance in the body design. It has simple organic shapes that are pleasing. The problem is that I suspect it just happened to turn out that way. 'Art' implies that someone used their imagination to express their idea of beauty or whatever. Is that true of the 356? Who was the designer? I am ignorant of this stuff, I admit.
But the interior... come on - where is that art? Seriously, the rearview mirror was clearly screwed on at the dealerships as an afterthought. And that gearlever? It's a piece of rebar.
And those early democrats... I could draw better stick figures than most of those guys when I was 8. BTW, most of them enjoyed hunting so they were probably Republicans.

Great link, Cecil.
I must say - I love motorcycle art, old or new. My favorite shows on cable include Biker Buildoff and American Chopper.

40+ year old chicks have the potential to bring some experience to the encounter. Potentially fewer tattoos and piercings too.

sometimes to wood of the older violin dries warps and becomes misshapen and doesn't play so well, often to stay in top condition they require a lot of maintenance and occasionally need to be reworked by a master craftsman to restore them to their previous luster

Reworked luster looks a lot better on a Strad than it does, say, here:

'48 was indeed a very good year. PAG was started, the transistor was invented, the Marshall plan was enacted, I was born.
Model 1 is a stunning design. Whoever disagrees, I'm sorry, he is not a true Porsche fan.

This is some four-star b.s. You could practice this on the over-40s. Since you're uninterested it would be easier to deliver and you might get surprised and wind up with a Stradivarius. When mastered, try it on the under -40s. It's amazing what a confidently delivered line of bull can accomplish.
The seats in that 356 are great. If you wanted to get acquainted with your date, you could take a hard right turn.

Unfortunately, all of the factory tour slots were already booked for the days we (my son and +40 year old wife) were going to be in Stuttgart. We walked around the factory area and spent about three hours in the Porsche Museum.
