Fix to high pitch whine that goes away when clutch is depressed
      #120841 - 04/28/06 09:46 PM

I ran a post a month or so ago regarding a high pitch whine coming from the engine that would only go away when the clutch was depressed. I went on vacation for two weeks and left my 03 turbo with one of the Porsche technicians that I trust. He heard the whine the first day he drove it home. At first he thought the whining was coming from the clutch cable but it turned out not to be the problem. He really didn't know where the whining was coming from. Fortunately, the following day a factory Porsche technicians was visiting from Stuttgart and was consulted on the problem. He suggested that the whine was coming from steering/oil tank (part #996-314-920-34). Sure enough, this part was replaced and no more whine. They also replaced another part called a Pentosin CHF202 (part #000-0430206-56). I don't know what this part is. They did have to remove both the expansion tank and the hydraulic pump in order to replace the steering/oil tank. Since this work has been done the whine is gone, the engine runs much smoother and now I can hear just the mechanical sounds of the engine. How sweet! That whining sound was really getting to be nerve racking. Hope this information helps any of you that might be experiencing the same problem. Tim

Perhaps I missed one of your follow-up posts, but did the "slapping" feeling get resolved as well?

I'm only getting the slapping/jerking now when the virocam (sp?)engages around 3100 rpm's. Not sure what the pump would have to do with this but the engine is much...much smoother. I have not spoken to the Porsche tech that worked on it except once when I was on vacation. That's when he told me that they thought it might be the pump. After it was repaired he drove it to my house and put it in the garage while I was still on vacation. The work order was on the sit and only indicated that the pump was replaced. I'm going to try to get up with him this week to see if he found anything else wrong with it that wasn't documented on the repair order.

There's a TSB for this. I had that issue as well.
